Bambu Lab AMS lite
The Bambu Lab AMS Lite Automatic Material System is a compact, intelligent multi-material management unit designed to enhance desktop 3D printing workflows. Built specifically for seamless integration with the A1 Series printers, AMS Lite enables reliable multi-color and multi-material printing while maintaining high efficiency and minimal user intervention.
Core Functionality & Engineering Design
The AMS Lite introduces automated filament handling with a focus on reliability, compatibility, and ease of maintenance. Its architecture supports up to 4 filament spools simultaneously, allowing dynamic switching between materials or colors during print jobs.
Key engineering highlights include:
- Multi-Color / Multi-Material Printing
Enables complex prints using multiple filaments in a single job without manual swapping. - Automatic Filament Backup System
Detects filament depletion and seamlessly switches to a backup spool, preventing print failures and minimizing material waste. - RFID Filament Synchronization
Integrated RFID reader automatically identifies compatible filaments and applies optimized print parameters via Bambu Studio. - Spring-Loaded Rotary Spool Holders
Designed to improve compatibility with various spool types, including cardboard (paper) spools. - Open & Accessible Structure
Transparent and modular design allows real-time monitoring and simplifies troubleshooting and maintenance.
Material Compatibility
The AMS Lite supports a wide range of 1.75 mm filaments, making it suitable for diverse applications:
Supported Materials:
- PLA, PETG, ASA, PET
- PA (Nylon), PC (Polycarbonate)
- PVA (dry), BVOH (dry)
- PP, POM, HIPS
- Carbon fiber variant: Bambu PLA-CF
Not Recommended:
- Glow-in-the-dark filaments
- PETG-CF and abrasive composites
Unsupported:
- TPU, TPE (flexible materials)
- Wet PVA/BVOH
- Carbon fiber or glass fiber reinforced filaments (non-compatible types)
These constraints ensure consistent feeding performance and prevent excessive wear on internal components.
Physical Specifications
- Dimensions: 397 × 208 × 342 mm
- Weight: 1.6 kg
- Construction Materials: ABS, PC, POM
- Supported Spool Size:
- Width: 40–68 mm
- Inner Diameter: 53–58 mm
Its compact footprint makes it suitable for desktop environments while maintaining industrial-grade functionality.
System Integration & Workflow
AMS Lite integrates directly with Bambu Lab’s ecosystem:
- Bambu Studio Synchronization
Automatic filament detection via RFID enables instant parameter configuration. - Support Material Optimization
Allows use of dissolvable or snap-away support materials, significantly simplifying post-processing. - Single AMS Limitation
A1 Series printers support only one AMS Lite unit, limiting the system to 4-color printing maximum.
Maintenance & Reliability
The system is engineered for minimal downtime:
- Tool-less access for quick servicing
- Visible internal structure for diagnostics
- Reduced risk of filament jams through optimized feeding paths
