Bambu Lab AMS
The Bambu Lab AMS (Automatic Material System) is an advanced filament management and multi-material solution designed to enhance the capabilities of compatible Bambu Lab 3D printers. Engineered with intelligent automation, environmental control, and seamless integration, the AMS enables reliable multi-color and multi-material 3D printing with minimal user intervention.
Core Functionality
The AMS supports multi-color and multi-material printing, allowing users to print with up to 4 filaments per unit. When combined with additional AMS units (up to 4 total), the system enables printing with up to 16 different colors or materials through parallel configuration using an AMS Hub.
A built-in automatic filament switching mechanism ensures uninterrupted printing. When a filament spool runs out, the AMS seamlessly transitions to a backup spool, eliminating print failures and reducing material waste.
Intelligent Filament Management System
The AMS is powered by a 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) integrated with multiple sensors and actuators. This intelligent system handles:
- Automatic filament loading and unloading
- Real-time fault detection and recovery
- Filament runout detection
- Filament winding monitoring
- Tangle detection with automatic print pause
This ensures consistent print quality while preventing common issues such as air printing or filament jams.
Environmental Control & Filament Protection
The AMS features an airtight enclosure with integrated desiccant-based moisture control, maintaining optimal humidity levels for filament storage. A built-in humidity sensor continuously monitors internal conditions and alerts the user when desiccant replacement is required.
This system is critical for preserving filament quality, preventing:
- Poor layer adhesion
- Nozzle clogging
- Print defects caused by moisture absorption
RFID Filament Recognition
The AMS supports automatic filament identification via RFID technology for Bambu Lab filaments. This enables:
- Automatic material recognition
- Instant configuration of optimal print settings
- Synchronization with Bambu Studio software
For third-party filaments, manual configuration is supported.
Material Compatibility
Supported Materials:
- PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PET
- Polyamide (PA), Polycarbonate (PC)
- Polypropylene (PP), Polyoxymethylene (POM), HIPS
